ABOUT WISE WOMAN
Wise Woman are a genre-bending quartet weaving ancient folk traditions with bold contemporary flair. With rich vocal harmonies, magnetic storytelling, and a dash of 90s girl power, they create live performances that are both timeless and fiercely timely.
Formed in 2021, the group has emerged as a compelling force on the UK folk and alternative festival circuit. Their sound — described as “startling and shimmering” by Folk Wales — blends folk, jazz, and musical theatre influences into a unique musical tapestry that’s captivated audiences on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, supported Radio 2 Folk Award winners The Young’uns, and lit up stages at FolkEast, Celtic Connections, Aldeburgh Festival, Secret Garden Party and more.
On paper, the band’s individual backgrounds might read as a rather unusual set of ingredients; a lifelong North West clog dancer-come jazz singer meets a West End musical star meets a site-specific opera director. However, each unique story was underpinned by the deep desire to connect as women, an understanding of the power of harmony singing, and the need to forge a new, joyful path out of artforms which can be so rooted in tradition that they forget that they are living.
Out of the rich resulting melting pot has come a powerful focus on voicing the untold stories of hidden women, both past and present, real and imagined. The band’s “shuddering and impressive” debut EP Thread (Fresh on the Net) delved deep into near mythical landscapes of fenland witches to the smoky underbelly of New Orleans through a wildly imaginative backdrop of cinematic strings and riotous vocal harmonies. 2025’s EP Hold the Wonder (“a thing of wonder” - FATEA Magazine) took a bold departure in sound. The EP is a celebration of acapella singing, the anchor at the heart of their live shows whilst still uplifting a colourful cast of protagonists from drag icons to wrongfully imprisoned climate protesters, to mystical seal women of the Scottish seas.
Wise Woman are musical shapeshifters, always hungry to learn and discover new ways of connecting to audiences. One thing always remains however: their live offerings are more than just music — they’re immersive journeys through storytelling, spellbinding vocal craft and sisterhood.
